Another day, another walk

This morning, though it looked like it might rain and the wind was switching every which way, I went for a rather long ramble. The strange sights of the street rarely fail to make my day: in Sunnyside, a sticker with a phone number was slapped on a lamp post, and the words "Pranks accepted!" were written beneath; on Skillman Avenue, I found a discarded notebook filled with high school calculus, as well as a printout of lyrics to Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" tucked into the front pocket; on a building in Greenpoint, graffiti hearts covered a door and were accompanied by a scribbled reminder to "buy candy." And the flowery chalking on a Brooklyn side street, above, was also quite charming.

Face to face

Loved these "sketches" of faces in black paint on the sidewalks of Greenpoint: but who's the artist? What's the story? Wish I knew.

In these empty lanes

I find it strange when my wandering takes me to places in the boroughs that are, by and large, unpeopled. Down by the water in Greenpoint, it was pretty quiet; although I ran into some people doing what could have been a photo shoot for Cycle World (black leather, artful posing astride powerful bikes), the streets otherwise seemed to be mine.

Streetside

Took a long walk today, from Long Island City to Greenpoint, passing over the Pulaski Bridge. It was absolutely clear and warmer than New York in February should be; there were oh so many things to see along the way. I suppose I'll be posting a few glimpses -- as in so many little corners of New York, even temporary walls become installations in the museum that is the city.

Nuit Blanche in Greenpoint

Bring to Light: Nuit Blanche NYC from Michael Zick Doherty on Vimeo.

I think I'm still too under the weather to venture out for this, but durn, it looks pretty cool. From Bringtolightnyc.org:

Bring to Light is New York City's first-ever Nuit Blanche festival. A Nuit Blanche is an all night arts festival of installations and performances celebrating the magic and luminance of light. Nuit Blanche events enliven cities all around the globe, but there has never been one in New York.

BRING TO LIGHT NYC will be held in Greenpoint, Brooklyn primarily on Oak Street between Franklin St. and the East River waterfront in Fall 2010, beginning at sundown. The event is free and open to the public. This unique block will play host to local and international artists, performers, galleries, and musicians as they Bring to Light the street itself as well as its unique assets including metal, set design and textile workshops, residential facades, an indoor gymnastics park, and much more.
